Why does virtually every brochure, website and eBook I see have a picture that combines MOST or ALL of the following:
- an asian, man or woman, smiling
- a black person, smiling
- an older white guy, smiling
- at least one woman, smiling or talking
- a laptop, unbranded
Is this really what your meetings look like? People smiling at each other around a laptop in a sunny boardroom? Do you really think that showing a multicultural environment makes anyone believe that you are everything to everyone?
Political correctness has never been my bag, it is the complete opposite of “it’s the thought that counts“. Marketing professors insist, rightfully so, that your idea simply can not please everyone, so don’t waste your time trying…
Why is it then, that this is ignored in the name of political correctness? Will I really be offended if someone wishes me a Merry Christmas? A Happy Hannukah? If they can’t come to my barbecue because it is Ramadan? Of course not. If it does, I may be an insensitive, clueless idiot.
From the choice of foods you serve at an event to the greeting cards you send out around holiday season (sigh…), just pick something nice and sincere, and let everyone enjoy the cultural differences. I’m not saying to act without consideration, I’m asking people to be themselves and to not make choices out of a fear of insulting people.
Who knows, you might even discover something fascinating about your entourage while you’re at it!
